By Geòrgia Iordache – Your Local Hiking Guide
Hola, adventurer! 🌿
Here are my top 10 hikes, tested by my own boots (and a few blisters!). Each includes difficulty level, distance, and insider tips to help you plan. Let’s go!
🥾 1. Penyagolosa Summit (1,813m) – The «Stone Giant»
📍 Near Vistabella del Maestrat | 🚶 Hard | 📏 14km (loop) | ⏱️ 5-6 hours
Why? The highest peak in Castellón offers 360° views from Valencia to the Mediterranean. The trail winds through ancient oak forests and past shepherd huts.
My Tip:
- Start at Sant Joan de Penyagolosa (a medieval hermitage).
- Pack a picnic—the summit panorama is worth savoring!
(Photo: Sunrise from Penyagolosa’s rocky peak.) Comming soon.
🌊 2. Sierra de Irta Coastal Trail – Where Mountains Meet the Sea
📍 Between Peñíscola and Alcossebre | 🚶 Moderate | 📏 12km (one-way) | ⏱️ 4 hours
Why? Cliffside paths with turquoise coves below, wild rosemary scenting the air, and zero development. Pure magic!
My Secret:
Best in spring—wildflowers explode in color!
Detour to Calas del Pebret and Playa del Russo for a swim.
🏰 3. Morella – Medieval Villages & Wild Landscapes
📍 Maestrazgo region | 🚶 Easy | 📏 11km (point-to-point) | ⏱️ 4 hours
Don’t Miss:
Font Dozella-Nacimiento(birth) of river Cérvol.
Morella’s wall walk before you start.
🌲 4. Desert de les Palmes – The «Green Desert»
📍 Near Benicàssim | 🚶 Easy | 📏 8km (loop) | ⏱️ 3 hours
Why? A low-altitude forest with ocean views, historic ruins (Castell de Montornés), and fragrant herbs underfoot.
Local Trick:
Stop at Ermita de Les Santes for a quiet moment.
5-10. Quickfire Favorites
5️⃣ Barranco de la Valltorta – Prehistoric cave paintings + canyon views (Moderate, 10km).
